How About A Gilmore Girls Musical?

There's a bright golden haze on the meadow...

After the success that Amy Sherman-Palladino, Dan Palladino and Sutton Foster have had with Velvet on Broadway, why not a Gilmore Girls musical? Frozen did so well (and Avenue Q before that), there’s always space in the market for a lighthearted musical.

Starting out in Miss Patty’s with the kids dressed up as root vegetables dancing and singing about families, a big party number for Rory’s homecoming / birthday and Luke’s lonely spotlighted soliloquy to Lorelai from his dimly lit diner just before the intermission. Jess and Dean riffing off High Society’s “Well, did you evah” before having a bust-up, mashed up family harmonies at the Friday night dinner, it’d be awesome.

Back in the real world, at this week’s Tony awards, Jessie Mueller beat both Sutton Foster and Idina Menzel (Wicked, Frozen, Rent) for best Actress in a Musical. I mention this for the many, lovely ties to Gilmore Girls.

Sutton Foster played our favourite dancing teacher in Bunheads (if you’re reading this site and haven’t seen Bunheads, stop reading now and come back when you’ve watched it: Amy Sherman-Palladino wrote it and you’ll have paroxysms when you see half the Gilmore cast show up), Mueller won for her performance as Carole King in Beautiful and of course Carole King sang the Gilmore Girls theme song before appearing in series 2, 5 and 6 as Sophie the music store owner. Adam Brody (Lane’s one time boyfriend Dave Rygalski) was also in attendance at the awards. I always have to stop myself calling him Mike Wazowski. It’ll happen one time.

Amy S-P and Dan P give an hilarious interview over at Vulture, on stalking Sutton Foster, what they wanted from what they were pretty sure would be the last Bunheads’ episode - and its eventual cancellation.

Amy Sherman-Palladino The incredibly humane — I say “incredibly” sarcastically — way they do it on ABC Family is: You’re done. You’ve shot it and then months go by before they make their decision. We were way, way, way off into our other world by the time they officially canceled it… It was a special little time, we came together and did great work and met each other, and now we move on and can be old and drunk and sad about what happened before.

Nice to get a little more closure on Bunheads. Stupid studio system.

So how about a Gilmore Musical?

Song and casting suggestions at the stage door, please. Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore) would be a ringer.
Did anyone catch Violet?
Or see Lauren Graham on Broadway?
